Dribbling past an opponent, passing without traveling, and finally getting the ball in the hoop! It sounds like the practice drills of the basketball team but it’s actually what you’ll see if you stepped into the elementary school gym after school last month. Around 60 students in grades 4 and 5 took part in a new after school program to learn the game of basketball and have a lot of fun along the way. Over the last two months the students have practiced hard, developing an understanding of the rules of the game and practicing individually and in small groups with the assistance of teachers Grant Rolls and Craig Karnitz. And all that practice didn’t go to waste— Every weekend for the past month the kids got to show their skills in a tournament style game with their classmates. The inaugural year of the program was a big hit with kids and parents alike, more than we could have imagined!
