SAFE donates sakura trees for the Iwate coast

The ASIJ Student Action for the Environment club (SAFE) recently donated funds to purchase 100 sakura (cherry blossom) trees for Sakura Line 311. This NPO is based in Rikuzentakata in Iwate Prefecture. The goal of Sakura Line 311 is to plant sakura trees every 10 meters along a 170 km stretch across Rikuzentakata to mark the areas where the Tohoku tsunami reached furthest. The hope is for future generations to never forget the tragic events of March 11th, 2011.

We at SAFE also see the sakura trees as a symbol for hope and revitalization of the Tohoku area. (Sayuri Sekimitsu, 12th grade student)
