Seventeen members of the Middle School Soccer A Team watched with baited breath as teammate Louis McKinnon approached the penalty spot to take what would hopefully be the winning kick of the game. After spending most of the second half chasing a St. Mary’s 0-1 lead, the Mustangs scored an equalizer 90 seconds from the whistle. As ten minutes of sudden-death extra time did not change the score line, the game went into a penalty shoot-out in which two Mustangs and three Titans were unsuccessful.
Louis, the seventh kicker in the shootout, effortlessly put the ball into the back of the net, giving the A Team its first Kanto Plains title in five years. For coach Steve Harris, it was his third title in 17 years – and the only championship he has won with a team that did not have a son of his on it. It was a particularly poignant but proud moment for Harris, who was coaching his last A Team match ever, as he is slated to leave ASIJ at the end of this school year.
