On Tuesday, December 3, thirteen students from the Yamano College of Aesthetics visited some of ASIJ’s Elementary and Middle School Japanese language classes. The formal kimono worn by the Yamano students elicited considerable interest among the ASIJ students and was an excellent introduction to a discussion of Japanese New Year customs.
It was fun, too, to review the Shichigosan festival we talked about in November and have some of our classmates dressed up in children’s kimono of the type worn at this time. When interest in Japanese dress waned, we took the opportunity to practice the Japanese we are learning in class for some fun, authentic conversations. Both sides enjoyed their time together very much. (Jo Ash, ES Japanese)
