Varsity Swim Team travels to Taipei for a Duel in the Pool

2014—the year of the horse, appropriately started with the Mustang swimmers departing for Taipei for the Varsity “Duel in the Pool” Meet with Taipei American School (TAS). The unique part of this trip was the opportunity to have a weekend long team exchange with the TAS Tiger swimmers. With 26 Mustang swimmers on the trip, we had a strong showing at the meet and were able to bond even more as a team.

In addition to a Friday practice session together with TAS and the Saturday swim meet, the exchange weekend included two nights home stay at the homes of the TAS swimmers, fun dinners out with our hosts, and the opportunity to take in some Taipei culture at the night market, dumpling restaurants and a day trip out to Jiufen, an ocean view town full of interesting shops and food stalls. Many of our swimmers bonded with their home-stay families and were sad to leave Taipei.

The Mustang girls won their division, and our team brought home a total of 9 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals between the boys and girls divisions. Four ASIJ swimmers were awarded FINA certificates: Brendan McGee, Emily House, Courtney Ishibashi and Daniel Botes.

This year’s Taipei trip was one of the best swim trips we have been on, especially in terms of spirit and energy. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to be part of this trip, and for the underclassmen on the team, I hope they get to experience another trip as great as the one we had this season.
