Though the word goes out over social media well in advance, members of the Mustang soccer family know instinctively that January 2nd at noon is the time of year to congregate at the main field for the annual Alumni vs. Varsity match.
The turnout for this year’s event was impressive, with over 40 players in attendance. The fact that the players covered a span of over two decades — from elder statesmen Tomi Brooks and Kenji Kushida ’97 to eighth-grade prodigy Ryusei Kent ’19 — speaks to the rich soccer heritage that has come to define ASIJ’s sports program. As the sport now boasts the largest player population across all grades and among both genders, the event is expected to grow in size. The play was fun and spirited and conditions were perfect for some great soccer.
