Japanese New Year Traditions Continue at the ELC

Omochi Pounding Day has become a special New Year tradition at the ELC. This year’s event began in the evening before the pounding, with all the children taking turns washing the glutinous rice and then letting it soak overnight.

On January 21, the entire ELC welcomed Mr. Kanie-san and his two associates from the Azabu-Juban Neighborhood Association. Throughout the morning, the children and parents in each class came together to pound the steamed rice until it was soft and smooth. The parents then helped to cut the sticky rice into little pieces and everyone enjoyed eating it with a variety of different toppings.

A huge thanks to all of the parents who volunteered their time to make this another successful event at the ELC!  (Jean Caskey, ELC Director)
