High School Model UN Represents ASIJ in Shanghai

Eight AISJ high school representatives made their way to Shanghai from January 16 to the 18th to participate in the Concordia International School Shanghai Model United Nations (CISSMUN). This is the first school year in which our Model United Nations representatives have participated in two international conferences. The first conference was the Interscholastic Association of Southeast Asian Schools’ Model United Nations (IASAS MUN) in Jakarta in November.

At CISSMUN, ASIJ represented Sudan. Our students participated in vibrant discussions on topics ranging from combating cultural indifference to the crime of domestic abuse, preventing illegal mining in sub-Saharan Africa and regulating the sale of illicitly mined resources as well as topics on preserving global linguistic diversity.

This Model UN conference is much more diverse in terms of attendees. CISSMUN includes several schools nearby in China, but also schools from Mexico, Italy, Sweden, Nigeria, and even North Carolina. With nearly 750 students participating, it was twice the size of the conference in Jakarta. Despite the size, the small committee format allowed our students to participate actively and be integral to the framing and debating of the resolutions for the topic they chose to focus on.

We hope that the continued enthusiasm of our Model UN participants will allow us to have the numbers to attend CISS again next January. (Sarah Sutter, HS Art Teacher)
