Each year the ELC Kindergarten students engage in project based learning as part of their study of cultures and traditions in Japan. The students selected an area of interest, from kamishibai (paper drama) to sumo to sushi, and worked in small groups to research each topic. The students then had the opportunity to create an artifact, demonstrating what they have learned.
Since artifacts are often found in museums, each class set up a museum of their own, with students acting as curators of the exhibits. They displayed Japanese musical instruments and statues. Many of the exhibits were interactive, such as “How to Wear a Kimono” and demonstrations on ink painting and origami.
Opening the exhibits to all, the younger ELC children and parents also had an opportunity to visit this living Japanese Museum and learn all about Japanese culture! (Jean Caskey, ELC Director)
