Author and illustrator Kevin O’Malley energizes the elementary school

Author and illustrator Kevin O’Malley took the ES by storm during his two-day visit in January. Riding the wave of success after publishing Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude, the kids’ high expectations were most definitely met! His own brand of “stand up comedy for kids” had students and teachers alike howling with laughter.  Energetic would be one way to describe his performances but the word does not do his hurricane-like enthusiasm justice.  Accompanied by on-the-spot live drawing, Kevin invited the kids to come up with all kinds of crazy storylines which he used as a vehicle for modeling the craft of storytelling. Despite the raucous back and forth, things always remained quite impressively under his control.  When not presenting in the library, Kevin worked in the art room where he invited students to come up with interesting things for him to draw.  When not working with kids, he was drawing, drawing and drawing. The man is a force of nature!  Kevin donated a beautiful drawing of our own ASIJ mustang to be auctioned off at the upcoming Spring Gala.  (Wouter Laleman, ES Librarian)
