Jody Fuller’s (ES Music Teacher) Grade 4 and 5 music classes recently completed a composition project based on the musical form of Theme and Variation. The form of Theme and Variation begins with a theme that comprises the main melody of a song, which is followed by variations of that melody. Our students used a common theme of the folk song “Hot Cross Buns.”
From that beginning the young composers used tools such as rhythm, melody, key, meter, style, instrumentation and accompaniment to create their own variations. They used iPads to explore another way of writing the composition through an app called NotateMe Now. The app was engaging and offered students a chance for immediate aural feedback. After composing independently, students collaborated with classmates to practice and perform their variations. Check out Jody’s Twitter account to see a few examples.
