ASIJ friends and families once again converged upon campus for Spirit Day on an overcast but fair-weathered Halloween weekend. This year’s Spirit Day theme was superhero inspired: “Better, Faster, Stronger!”
The days preceding this year’s October 29 Spirit Day were filled with a medley of Spirit Week activities, encouraging students to show their Mustang pride. High school activities built up to Friday’s Spirit Assembly, where students performed skits, introduced the sports teams and connected with their classmates.
Among other festivities, elementary students donned ridiculous socks on Monday, humorous hats on Wednesday and school colors on Friday. As Spirit Day landed on Halloween weekend, this year’s festivities also included the elementary school Halloween Parade.
Family, friends, students and faculty finally came together on Saturday for Spirit Day, as student service groups introduced their causes and clubs showed off their activities.
In total, our ASIJ Mustangs hosted four different sports during Spirit Day. Both varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams won over CAJ with scores of 3-0 and 2-0, respectively. The overcast sky opened up, allowing the sun to shine through just in time for the varsity football game. Our team took the victory against Yokota 53-16. Our cross-country teams competed at Tama Hills during Spirit Day. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams brought home a win.
Saturday was also a day of firsts. We held the First Annual ASIJ Karate Tournament in the multi-purpose room, with close to 40 students in the all school karate program participating.
The varsity football half-time show included the first ever faculty bubble soccer match. Faculty members went head-to-head in one of the most brutal sports known to man as bubble soccer fans the world over tuned-in to view what may be the next generation of pro bubble soccer players.
This year was also special as the PTA held a first-ever Winterfest raffle pre-draw for Tokyo Disney Resort Passes, won by one of our elementary school students.
Many thanks to the Boosters and PTA for organizing this great event and for all the volunteers that made it run smoothly! If you would like to view Homecoming Week or Spirit Day videos, check back at ASIJ TV or keep an eye on their Facebook page.
